GMC regulating doctors...

What advice does the GMC give?
Our Good practice in prescribing and managing medicines and devices guidance says that wherever possible you must avoid prescribing for yourself or anyone with whom you have a close personal relationship. We expect our registrants to follow our guidance, if you decide to act contrary to the guidance you should be prepared to justify your decision to do so.

If you do decide to prescribe for someone close to you, you must;

a. make a clear record at the time or as soon as possible afterwards. You should include your relationship with the patient and the reason it was necessary to prescribe.
b. tell the patients own GP what you have prescribed and any other information necessary for continuing care unless they object.
Controlled medicines must not be prescribed for yourself or someone close to you unless;

a. no other person with the legal right to prescribe is available to assess and prescribe without a delay which would put your, or the patient’s, life or health at risk or cause unacceptable pain or distress, and
b. the treatment is immediately necessary to:
a. i save a life
b. ii avoid serious deterioration in health, or
c. iii alleviate otherwise uncontrollable pain or distress.
It is important that if you find yourself in a situation where it is necessary to prescribe for someone close to you, you treat them as you would your other patients.
